Wont start does backfire

My 82 750 Maxim won't start. I didn't run it for about a week do to an oil leak from the gear case cover, so I replaced the gaskets. Now all it does when I try to start it is backfire through the exhaust.

The only other thing I did after changing the gaskets was tighten up the bolts to the windjammer. I did notice something flat with wires going to it that was connected to the bolt I tightened. It did move this component when I tightened the bolt and maybe the wires got loose. Since I'm new with the whole cycle thing I don't know what it is I will be working on.

I've have done little to no work on cycles before and I'm thinking about trying to fix this problem myself.

I finally found it in the service manual, I guess it's the horn. So would the wiring from the horn cause the bike not to start?

 

Nope. Won't do it. Would pop the signal fuse and that is about it. Takes out the tach and the flasher. When you say gear cover, which side of the bike are we talking about?

 

The left side, gear shifter selector cover.

 

What's your battery voltage?

 

Battery is fully charged, I have a tender on it currently to make sure it stays fully charged. It turns over great, just backfires and puffs.

 

See that you didn't pinch the wires for the Pick-up's when you put that cover back on.

It's EASY to do!

Remove the Fastener and shield and use a narrow, long and thin screwdriver to inspect the wires coming out of the Crankcase Cover and tucked-up around the front of that Gear Selector Cover.

If you pinched the wires there won't be a signal to to the Igniter.
I know that this is a common occurance.

I have done it a couple of times, myself.
Even after moving the wires out of the way, they love to get caught in the mating surface and effectively get cut through by the outside case.

If this is what happened ... solder and heatshrink the wires back together for the repair.

 

I love you man. I threw some connectors on one broken wire and it runs like a top again. When I place the cover on I used a screwdriver to move the wires over, but of course they must have moved over once I started tightening.

The connectors are just tempary till I get a chance to solder them up.

I'm glad it was that easy.
You do want to solder those wires and make a splice that is not crimped-on.

Those wires need to carry an impulse from the Pick-up coils and if the splice isn't nice and solit you will detect a miss or have a stalled engine if they come apart.
