I started putting everything back together and while getting things cleaned to put the pistons back in, I noticed that there are 2 different compression rings. One has sharp edges and the other has chamfers and also feels like it has a coating on it, moly maybe. Which is the top ring?

    Working from memory here...

But I'm pretty sure the chamfered ring is the top ring on each piston...followed by the oil ring and then the square cut bottom compression ring.

But...best to wait for second and third assurances from the experts here before proceeding.

I had a great detailed article on this once so will try to find it and post it for you.

My memory seems to think the chamfered ring goes on top also. The third or oil control ring on this piston is a 3-piece arrangment, so that part is a no-brainer.

The 3 peice waffle looking ring goes on the bottom its the oil control ring. the two on the top which are the chamfered rings are compression rings.
