new xj owner need help..

    just got my bike over the week end. it's a 82 xj1100. it was running great monday,went today to store ran great. when got back and started the bike it would not go into gear,with out killing the bike. adjusted clutch still would not go. could the clutch be bad? it's got 19900 miles on it. thanks..

    It could be a sticking sidestand switch.

    My bike had done that a few time too. I gave the switch a good shot of WD40 and worked the side stand up and down....has not done it since.

    may well be just a switch that is sticking, give it a try and see if it helps.

    thanks for the info but i think its the clutch. had the wrong oil in it i was told by dealer.

    well anything is possible with these older bikes.

    what kind of oil did you have in the bike ?

    but if it dies as soon as you put it into gear, it sure sounds like a problem somewhere with a safety switch.

    When you put the bike into gear does it lurch forward then die or does it just die as soon as you put it in gear?

    If it lurches forward then it probably is the clutch. If it dies as soon as it goes into gear, it's more than likely the switch.

    I recommend you check the sidestand switch before you put money and time into a new clutch. Switches are cheap and easy to fix.

    Clutches typically don't go from good to unusable in a day.
