    Hey Folks:

    I'm new and have a few questions...I hope someone can assist. I just purchased an 83' XJ750, however, after rebuilding the carbs (and getting the machine running) the airbox nearly filled with oil. I drained the oil from the motor and put new oil in the motor (thinking that originally the machine had way too much oil) but oil still rushed into the airbox when the bike was running.

    Note: the oil is flowing into the airbox from the hose on the left side of the motor (looks like a crank-vent of some kind).

    Could some other factor be causing the oil to shoot out of the motor??

    I disconnected the vent hose (thinking that perhaps the airbox vacuum was causing the problem) but the oil was still blowing out (into a bucket). Is it possible that I am missing something?? Do these bikes hold very little crank-case oil (I don't think I over-filled it....but I can't see through the glass on the right side of the engine case) ??

    Please help::

    Much thanks from the mountains: dtkid

    Hello there dtkid,
    It sounds like you have over serviced (overfilled) the crank case. Best to put the beast up on it's center stand and check the sight glass. You should be using about 2 1/2 quarts to fill her up. My brother (through ignorance) once serviced my bike with 5 quarts, resulting in the same problem you are having.
    Drain and refill the case.

    The guy I bought my bike from did the exact same thing.
    Had oil under it, and in the airbox.

    2.6 Qts with filter, 2.3 without if I remember correctly
    (but I don't see the point in doing 1/2 the job, so filter gets done every time)

    Thanks guys:

    You were "on the spot" correct. After I read the replies last evening I went out and re-drained the motor and carefully watched the eye-glass while I put about 2.5quarts in her. The oil leveled-up perfectly and all is well and running with the machine.

    Thanks for the help. Bye the way....are all XJ750s.. "Maxims"? I can't seem to find any marking on the machine that indicates that the bike is actually a "Maxim". However, it is one of the classic "sorta-purple" bikes that I always remember the Maxim from back in the day.

    Thanks again: dtkid

    Post your VIN and we can tell you if it is a Maxim or a Seca.

    A photo might be easier and less of an issue. We can determine linage from styling cues.
