Local independent shop recommended I run NGK BP7ES plugs in my 1985 XJ 700 Maxim. Manual recommends NGK BP8ES. Yes - No? Good - bad?

not sure but i know my 82 XJ750 Maxim runs BP7ES. I'm pretty sure that's recommended in mine.

I'd go with what the manual recommends. Maybe the mechanic is getting the 750 and 700 mixed up.

The BP7ES is a hotter plug than the BP8ES.

What would be the benefit of a hotter plug?

On a stock engine - no benefit.

If you're a mechanic out of BP8ES a hotter plug means a sale!

hotter plug stays clean longer if the plugs are fouling out often. if it's not fouling plugs, I'd go with the recommended range

If the plugs are fouling out often, the mixture needs to be adjusted. Hotter plugs would just be a band-aid.
