Oh man I took the tags off yesterday to see if it was just two little holes to be filled in, and was shocked to see that stupid bracket in there. Thinking body fill (bondo) and then reblast the tank. what a drag. =(

get all the paint out of there and use fiber re-enforced filler.

I used bondo to fill the holes. you will have to do this a few time to build up the area. once it dries find a long sanding block to make it flush wit the surrounding area. I stripped my tank down to the metal and used a 3m brown disc to rough up the surface. i then used flat black primer with 2 coats.

then I used gloss black about 3 light coats 20 minutes apart the last coat make it a nice even medium coat without runs.

I used 1500 & 2000 Grit sand paper to wet sand the finish and laid down a double layer of clearcoat.

let it cure a few weeks before you start to clean and shine it.

the paint stripper i used was for aircraft and came in a spray can from auto zone.

Im using a dremel tool to cut the flanges off on mine then after sanding out the recess, Im going to try some old school leading, my father taught me years ago...thought it would forgo some of the hassle with bondo....

I'm in the process of doing the same, but f'd up a bit and now have a tear in the tank where the bracket is welded to the tank. Anyone have suggestions on how to seal this area? I was thinking of using some tank repair epoxy in the hole and then filling in as normal. Let me know if I'm heading down the wrong path.

a soldering gun and solder can fill a 1/4 inch hole in a car fender without too much trouble

just weld it with a mig. run a nice fat bead and maybe even double pass so it builds up to the surface

Get the spot you are filling down to bare metal.
FILL the spot with MarGlas and shape it.
FINISH the spot with a layer of Bondo.
Sand, sand, and more sand 'til its ready!
