I have a 1980 XJ650 Maxim. It's making a rattling noise from the top end. I would like to adjust the tensioner, or reset it if it's automatic. How can I tell if it's auto or not? does someone have a picture that could lead me in the right direction of which bolt to adjust?

According to the Yamaha Parts Web Site ... the '80 - 650 Max has a Manual Tensioner.

There should be a 10 mm Hex on the side of the Tensioner, located on the center of the rear of the block between the middle two Carbs.

I found that thing sticking out the rear of the engine. What's the procedure to get rid of any slack in the chain?

Take off the timing cover, 4 bolts. left side of the engine. turn the square bolt counter clockwise until the C lines up with the fixed pointer, release the lock nut on the tentioner and slacken the bolt, 12 mm & 10 mm respectively, tap the casing of the tentioner with a hammer handle. tighten the bolt & then the lock nut. replace cover & have coffee.
