I've been reading threads and replies. Lots of good info. Then I decided to "sign up". Problem is, my bike is a XS400J. I don't see too many people talking about those. So will this site really be of any use to me? I know my bike is a beginner bike but for free----it's well worth it. Is there a forum out there for the little guys?

    jetchaser,

    Welcome.

While your motorcycle is not an XJ (it's an XS) you'll find quite a few similarities. You should be able to get some useful information here.

We know that 400 ought to be an XJ ...

Pull up a chair and tell us whats wrong.
Order a Manual if you don't have one!

haha, should be an XJ? I wish.

Currently my only problem is the fuel cock valve assy. I went riding the other night and it seemed to run out of fuel. Played with the position, turned it to prime and it worked great to get me home. Got on the sellers websites such as bikebandit.com, cheapcycleparts.com, and so on but nobody sells the whole thing. So i ordered o-rings and gaskets and we will see if I'm smart enough to overhaul it myself.

My other problem, there never is enough power. Haha, I think it has something to do with the 400 number in my model. So that, I will live with for now.

    Not always.
Sometimes the Emulsion Tubes need a Cleansing.

Sometimes the Diaphragm Piston Bores need De-aluma-oxidizing.

You might find a little more Umph with a Bump-up-One Main Fuel Jets.

are you talking about the forum on here for "other bikes" or a whole other website? I've searched through the other bike forum and found a lot of XS400 comments.

    Welcome aboard...

There are a few of us XS400 J & K owners on here....
Most other XS's are SOHC, our DOHC's are closer to the XJ's...
So basically in the middle of the 2......

You can still find petcock rebuild kits.....
Otherwise, look in here fro Rick's carb guides.... priceless!!!!!

I do have a manual if you need specefic info, untl you can locate 1.

Shouldn't be a lack of power.... you should almost be able to throw yourself with a snap of the throttle :)

    GO XS400J!!!!!!

Partsnmore carries a universal on/off/res petcock that I installed on my xs400j and I LOVE it. It even cured a vacum leak and helped my hanging idle issue. You do need to do a little reaming out of the hole to get the petcock to fit though. I tried rebuilding my stock one... didn't take for me.

In terms of power, once you have those carbs cleaned and tuned, you will be AMAZED by the power that little engine puts out.
