Should I pull the jugs?

OK... I have the head off already and I have a full gasket set on the way. What is to stop me from pulling the jugs to clean up the rings since the bike has been sitting for years.

Does this sound like a good idea and some easy preventative work or should I just leave well enough alone since everything seems to be working perfectly at the moment.

Also... the black plastic surrounds on the front studs. Important? need to be replaced since they're pretty much completely disintegrated? Not really necessary? I don't see any evidence of them on the back set of studs so how important could they be?

If it has a lot of miles, I woulkd check the ring end gap, bore condition, and possibly rering and hone if needed.

It's got 20K on it. I don't think it's "high mileage" What do you all think?

Don't sweat the plastic rings, you can live without them.
If you have had the head off for quite some time, odds are pretty good the lower sealing O-rings on the bottom of the jugs should be replaced. I'd hate to have gone through all of the effort and a new gasket set just to have to crack it all open again to stem an oil leak. Cheap insurance if you ask me.
20K is just broken in. Run it.
