here is a very good looking maxim with low low miles...

it doesnt have a title though (or a key) and while im not looking for another bike, how hard would it be to get a title for a bike like this?

im only asking because this would be an outstanding deal if you could get it registered...

i remember when in was in the Air Force a co-worker bought a basket case 65 catalina convertible from a junk yard. he had all sorts of trouble getting a title for it because the couple that had gotten rid of it 21yrs prior (10-28 search thru friendly police pals) were the last ones to hold a title and they were no where to be found...

    Trivial in Michigan.

You just gotta get it here.

Google Broadway Title service or International Title service to get an idea of cost, and for detailed information regarding replacement title acquisition.

Looks like a great candidate for a restoration.

But, no matter how you slice it ... that "No Title" problem gets in the way, huh?

I know in Maine u don't need a title for anything older then 15 years. U just need a bill of sale! Call ur town office or DMV. N ask about the title law for ur state.

Ok, I guess I should have been more clear.

In Michigan, if it's more than ten years old and worth less than $2,500 you only need to make a reasonable case that you acquired it legally and they will issue a title. I have done this with a bill of sale. Of course, they do check to make sure it hasn't been reported stolen.

It is unnecessary to pay anyone for this service if you are titling a bike in Michigan.

Nobody ... NEEDS ... another bike!

But, we all know a good deal when we see one!

If I didn't live in Massachusetts; I'd bite.

But the Registry of Motor Vehicles will kick your butt out the door if you don't show-up with THE Hard Title.

    No Title. No Registration.

    Replacing a Title
If your vehicle title is lost, you may replace it by processing a duplicate title application at a Secretary of State branch office. All owners shown on the title record must sign the title application and present identification. If an owner cannot appear, they may complete and sign an Appointment of Agent form designating another individual to sign on their behalf.
Your duplicate title will arrive in the mail in 7-10 days. If you need your title sooner, instant (same-day) title service is available at several branch offices. To locate the nearest instant title office, click here.
The replacement title fee is $15. There is an extra $5 fee for same-day title service.
Note: Your situation may differ from the information outlined above. Please check with our Information Center at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424) to make sure you have all the correct paperwork before going to a branch office.

You must have been lucky, because I went through the same process, with a 27 year old bike worth $1,000 at best and a bill of sale, and they said no can do. Of course, the last time it had been registered was "only" 4 years ago, so that may play some part. I called SOS HQ in Lansing and they actually told me that the PO had broken the law by selling the bike without the title - "title dumping" as they called it.

Now that we are officially entrenched in the Information Age ... there ought to be a site where you can go to ... type-in the VIN and see whose name comes-up as the Title Holder and where in the you-know-what they are!

There ought to be a Clearing House for getting a Legal Title without going through the Mob to get one.

I think that place in Vegas that gets you Clear Title in a couple of days sends a couple of the boys 'round to see a guy at the Nevada DMV!

Here it is from the Michigan Secretary of State web site:
    LINK

Here is the certification of ownership form from the Michigan Secretary of State.
    Ownership Certification form

I made a mistake in my initial response. The vehicle only needs to be six years old rather than ten.

Mikef, I did one of these this year. The form says:
They probably told you the truth about it being illegal to sell a vehicle without a title. The clerk at my local Secretary of State office seemed familiar with the form and the process. She requested a VIN check from the state police and had the answer back in about 15 minutes. It was really quite painless. I did have a bill of sale as supporting documentation.

    Call the State Police Headquarters.
Tell them You BUILT a bike from Salvaged Parts.

They will make an arrangement for the bike to be inspected and issue you a Salvage Title.

Then you have to have the bike officially inspected.
If it passes you get the Salvage Title Stamped and move on to the RMV>

I talked to the ITS folks, and he told me that they get power of attorney from you and make application in your name for title in Maine I believe. Along with proof of insurance and notorized bill of sale, you end up with a Maine Title and plates good for a year for around $165. My '77 XS750 is going to run me $140.
