Exhaust options

    Didn't really find what I was looking for in a search, so...

    The exhaust is pretty shot on my bike. The cross piece let's out alot of the exhaust, and this bike is REALLY loud right now. I'm not opposed to a loud bike, but this is a little too loud.

    I'd like an exhaust that is noticable, but not TOO noticable. So, what are the Jardine and MAC exhausts like? Super quiet, middle, loud? And what are the quality of these like? Any other options for the Secas?

    I have an 82 Maxim 750, bought the MAC 4-into-1 system from Dennis Kirk. My stock mufflers were shot and I wanted something quieter.

    The bike is borderline, almost too loud. I don't like to start it at 7:00 in the morning in my apartment complex because it might, maybe be too loud and disturb the neighbors. It's borderline.

    It has a nice raspy bark around 3000rpm. Overall, sounds powerful, like a blend between UJM and crotch-rocket. It's a canister as opposed to the megaphone option. Muffler has no packing, and I'm not sure if you can add packing and get it quieter.

    The installation was pretty easy. No major conflict, the supplied hanger bracket fit okay. Only issue is that pulling the oil plug means draining straight onto the 4-into-1 collector, kinda messy but burns off quick.

    By the way, if anyone needs the header / crossover portion of a stock exhaust system, I still have it.

    did you have to adjust your carborators for the 4.1 mac exhaust?

    I've seen the Mac 4-1 on E-bay for about $300, which puts it out of my price range. I need mufflers only on mine (headers & crossover are OK). and I'm tempted by the universal mufflers from JC Whitney. Not to hijack the thread too much, but does anyone have any info on them? I have the remnants of the original yamaha megaphones, which are about 24 inches long, will I mess things up by putting 18 inch mufflers on?

    Speedwagon: I've also got the MAC 4-into-1 on my bike. They fit well, and are pretty much the cheapest full-system replacements out there. Mine is all black, not like the black/chrome in the picture. You do have the oil drain issue though, but as said - it's not too bad. Plus getting to keep the center stand was important to me. Mine's not too loud, but as Brad said - it can be a little noticeable on quiet mornings/nights. I've been playing with using a little muffler insulation (these don't have any) to quite it a bit -- I use Roxul insulation.

    Foximus: I've also got a K&N air filter in the stock airbox, so yes - I did find that my bike was in dire need of jetting to get it to run right. With the stock air filter - you can probably get away with the MAC exhaust & stock jets ok. Trick is these bikes were tuned very lean right from the factory, so it doesn't take a lot to lean them out even further. Best is to find someone with a Colourtune plug and check them -- or failing that, a shop can do it.

    DarthBob: Can't comment on those JCW replacements, but in general any of the 'slip-on' replacements should work - size really doesn't matter. Problem is you won't know how it's going to sound or affect your carbs until after you've put them on.

    My '82 XJ750 Maxim came with a Kerker 4in1 that owner installed in 1983.
    Good power but sputtered if I nailed it at 2000 up to 3000 RPM's, then took off to 9500 RPM's nicely. No center stand and no oil plug or filter access. Plus, it was rusty.
    Don't know if carbs were properly jetted, and don't think so.

    Picked up the Mac 4in1 canister, all black.
    It is a little quieter, and looks great. To me, almost too quiet.
    Deeper (more bass sounding?) than Kerker.
    As others stated, center stand will fit (BTW, I need spring and bolts), and oil filter and plug are accessible.
    Cured the 2000 - 3000 RPM bog, but now has slight bog at 3000 to 3500 RPM WOT. Still takes off above 4000 and quickly hits 9500 RPM, but not as quick as the Kerker did.
    Again, did not touch jets. Stock air filter. (rebuilt carbs 6 months ago when I got bike).

    Another note about the RPM's. I can not go WOT unless I have exceeded the bad range (3000 with Kerker, 3500 with Mac). It will sputter and sound like a dog if I open it up too soon. Once I pass the bad point, I can open it up, and she flies. I end up slowly rolling power on, or quickly downshift to get RPM's up there before hitting it. Never synced carbs, so that could be whole problem?.?

    BTW, do most of you crank your bikes up that high? Mine shoots up to 9000+ RPM so fast once I hit 5000 - 6000, I don't have much choice at WOT but to power shit at about 9000 to 9500 RPM. Or, I could baby it........ Nah...

    I never rejetted. I'm pretty sure I bought a UNI filter. I don't have any serious bog problems, but sometimes power seems a little flat.

    I have universal mufflers on mine. They need to be painted black-but they're fine for now. Better than the rusted out originals that were on the bike when I bought it.

    Greetings all. Haven't tried this with the Maxim yet, but planning to. You might look at fitting stock Harley mufflers to the collectors. This is a fairly popular option for the XS1100 group, as the stock HD mufflers can be had ridiculously cheap (sometimes free), have great chrome and are well made.

    Something to consider, and I'll let the group know how my project comes out.

    Actually, that's the worst part of my system. I have a monster leak at the crossover, and I have alot of rust on the entire manifold/crossover section.

    If that's the same piece as a seca, I'd love to take it off your hands! My mufflers aren't that bad yet, so I think I can still use them without being too loud.
