Springer forks

    Aloha,
    In all probability, I am going to be bobbing my maxim this winter. I would like to make some springer forks for the front suspension. I would probably be smithing it old-school style(hammer and anvil and the like.) If I can find and old set and just modify them to suit my purpose, I will do that first.

    I can see a potential problem in the front brake setup. Many home-done springer-fork sets I've seen have been from Australia, and they do not require front brakes there.(Or didn't at the time of the pictures that I've seen.) This is going to take a bit of planning, so I figured I would enquire early. I would like to get some opinions from people who have worked/rode with springer forks. I am opting for a shorter set, as opposed to the really long chopper-style forks. I like the look, and by most accounts, the work better when closer to a vertical, as opposed to horizontal axis. Any diagrams and the like would be helpful.

    You could put a drum brake front rim off an old dirt bike on it. This would be a lot easier than trying to mount a caliper on the springer forks.Or you could delete the front brake entirely,and do the "Bedrock Stop",if your your footwear is up to the task.(Be more like Fred!)

    You know I would go for the bedrock stop but for those pesky inspections!

    Look into the laws in ur state 4 reg. ur bike as an antique. I reg. my bike as an antique(Anything older then 25 years I believe). Now I dont need 2 get it inspected. I can do pretty much what I want 2 it. The only downfall is: I can't have my bike as a "Daily driver"! Which I don't, But I ride it "daily".. ;) I have 3 other cars reg. as my "Daily drivers"!

    Just an idea..

    At Daytona Bikeweek, I saw the brake you need. Not a drum or a disc, it fits inside a small hub- - it's a clutch pack!!! 360 degrees of braking efficiency, works with springers, and wire wheels.

    I don't have a link to it, search custom chopper sites.

    I can assure you mate we require front brakes here in oz.I look at what you blokes can get away with and I'm amazed.
    Go for a big drum on the front and polish the sh*t out of it big eye catcher on the front it stops you and suits the old skool look your obviously looking for.
