    Greetings!

Anyone out there tried out the Royal Purple synthetic hypoid gear oil? I've read through the threads about GL-4 vs. GL-5, and based on how nasty the oil inside my diff looked, I'm a little worried about what previous owners may have done.

I can get the Royal Purple reasonably cheap, but it is a combo that is SUPPOSED to be safe for GL-4 & GL-5 requirements. Just wondering if anyone out there has tried this wide range synthetic gear oils. From the threads it looks like Redline is the popular brand, but I'd have to order it.

To be honest, I've never worried that much about the gear oil in the final drive. Replace it every 5 years with a quality 70-90 wt hypoid oil, and it's been golden for the last 18 years.

I'm sure the Royal Purple stuff would be just fine. Don't know about that 70/140 number though - quite the range.

At the end of the day, I found out two things:

First, supposedly you can get honest-to-DoG GL-4 gear oil at your local Mitsubishi dealer. Evidently it is used in some of the Eclipse models.

I ended up at the Yammie dealer and there is Yamalube gear oil, rated GL-4/GL-5. The parts guy recommended the Golden Spectro, but since he had only used it in more modern bikes, I went with the YamahaLube. It was about $7.50 for a quart, and I believe it is non-synthetic.
