    Greeting from the UK,

We are in the middle of our summer so its peeing down

Had just put the carbs back after cleaning and new jets / gaskets etc
Have the bike running quite well - starts and idles nicely - synch / colortune first - then slight adjustment so that 1,2,4 ( left to right as you sit on )are 95% there, but plug 3 will not adjust on colortune ( constant yellowish colour ) and no matter how far in I put the mixture screw in it is staying rich.
I believe looking at out threads I am getting to much fuel through - I have checked to see if the float is sticking or if the level is incorrect but cannot find a problem there.
One other thing, previous owner has the petcock as a gravity feed ( not using the vacuum, just a straight on / off )

Any ideas were I should investigate further ?

I have spent so much time on this I might have to let a mechanic have a go, :( if you XJ experts cannot come up with an answer.

    Ian

Check your spark on that cylinder and make sure it is strong and blue in color. If you have a weak spark, that might account for the running rich problem. Had a similar problem on my Virago.

You can investigate a few things before handing-off the work to someone else.

First, check to see that the tiny O-ring at the bottom of the Pilot Mixture Screw isn't tilted sideways and is in fact seated correctly at the bottom of the chamber.

Every so often, as the Pilot Screw is being replaces the O-ring and its Flat Washer get spun-around ans they mysteriously exchange places.
Do you have the correct size Pilot Fuel Jet in the bottom side?

Are the Main AIR Jet and the Pilot AIR Jet in the correct position.
If you removed the AIR Jets (from beneath the Diaphragm Rubber) they are easily confused.
(Their values are misprinted in the Haynes Manual).

Swap the Pilot Mixture Screw from the offending Cylinder with one of the ones that are capable of being adjusted correctly and see if that helps your situation.
