So I couldn't wait for the CD and took the carbs apart last nite to clean it. Some of the parts are currently bathing in the dip. Plan to put it together tonight. The only issue that came up was trying to pull off the emulsion tube from #1. I am using clymers and it had a picture that was pulling the emulsion tube from the top (where the diaphragm sits) using a needle nose pliers. I did this and it was pretty tough. The teeth of the pliers made very small grooves on the emulsion tube.

    Q) Could this be a significant issue I have to deal with?

I figured out you could push it through from the bottom. Anyway here is the plan. Put the carb back together, adjust the float level.

    Q) Aftwards I do not know which comes first, carb sync or colortune?

I just ordered the colortune from carbtune.com (hopefully it comes soon-id like to get ridding soon).

    Q) I am intending to build the YICS tool- can you get the parts at the home depot?

    Q) What tools do i need to build the tool?

    Q) Since I do not know when the colortune will come and granted that I can synch the carbs before hand can I ride the bike before it gets colortuned?

Thanks all for the great info.

Two more questions, I wanted to touch up some of the rust in the frame. Could I just use black spray paint? I was intending on using steel wool then repaint.

Where to get rtv sealant for the carb boots. I wanted to spray them just for good measure.

If your emulsion tubes have small bite marks under the round part on that seats on the bottom of the venturi ... ignore it ... or smooth it a bit with emery paper and shove it back in ... if its got spurs sitting up those need to be smoothed out ... and well ... Its gotta seat and gotta look like flat when seated ... air flow through there determines your jetting and how much fuel gets pulled out ... you dont want a nice little divot there ... but under it ... dont bother ...
Now with the carbs out ... you dont need the YICS tool ... eyeball synch it ... I eyeball synch everything ... look at the bright sky and fiddle the 3 screws till you see equal daylight through each ... easy ... 2-3 min ... OK 5 mins for first time. I do 2 cyl carbs that way and they run like butter ... which is a marvel ... since they ran like sheiete to begin with ... and are very sensitive to the synch part ... vibrate like crazy even it they are a wee bit off ...
Color tune is to jet it right ... that has to come in at the end ... balancing the carbs is first ... eyeball and put it back, and after you get it running you can colortune and re synch with YICS tool ... The synch has to be reasonably close or it may mess up your idle and low speed jetting ... eyeball will get you well in the zone ... heck eyeball is better than vacuum ... just more work though ...
    Cool.

Still close to the subject , srinath , i was going to do a post on that , i have not got the motor back in yet to test it , but what i did too was use the eyeball , and then went further after thinking and used a small bit/strip of wet and dry [lubricated] the really fine stuff and used that as a feeler gauge in between the butterfly and housing until the same amount of drag for the 4 carbs on the bench , i hope it works , its sounds rough and maybe is so i will see....

rust! , one needs to kill the rust thats there as it will come back , "rust killer" is a cheep product out here.then paint..

I have heard of people using feeler guages or drill bits to synch butterflies ... I haven't personally been able to do that ... I have much better luck with eyeball ...
    Cool.

Here's the only one I can answer: I found everything at the Depot except the rubber tubing. Had to go elsewhere for that.

I am reading clymers and it doesnt say much about how to synch using the YICS tool. I still have not got my xj cd but i cant wait to ride the bike. Does anyone have a few moments to tell me how to use thins thing. And what are the butterfly valves. i cant seem to find it in this diagram:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... agram.html

Also, when i am eye ball synching, i am looking at the synch screws and making sure that all are the same height right?

    thanks

The height of the screws means nothing.
What you are trying to accomplish is getting all 4 butterflies in the same relationship to each other.

The butterflies are the aluminum round shaped disks inside the carb throat that open as you roll the throttle shaft.
Some people use a bread wrapper tie wire or piece of paper. Place it under the butterfly and adjust your screws in the correct order until you feel a slight drag on your shim of choise. Kind of like using a feeler gauge on setting valves. Keep adjusting until you get the same drag on all butterflies. That should get you pretty close until you get them installed and use the yics tool and carb sticks to set them by vacuum.
