But it turned out to be a XS650. Not what I was expecting at all... But I'm tempted. It hasn't been run since the guy got a new bike last year but it's complete and the motor turns. AND it has a kick-start! Of course, in stock form it's a pretty dorky looking bike, with those pull-back bars and big puffy (but probably comfortable) seat. Hmmmm...

I would've taken the "XJ" no matter the condition as I have lots of spares for it and I wanted to fix it up for the GF. But I have no background knowledge of XS bikes. I imagine they're at least as easy to work on as the XJ's.

Anyone know of anything I should be particularly worried about?

This XS has alot of style and great potential. They take well to cafe racer styling. I would have bought it. Plus there's quite a bit of aftermarket parts for the XS series.

I'm slowly but surely talking myself into it. If nothintg else, I can make my money back (and then some) parting it out. He'll let me have it for $200.

Of course, I'd much rather put it on the road. Parting would be a last resort.

If you want that bike to run again I have one word for mikesxs.com

It's the best place on the net for parts for that bike. Buy the damn thing it's a great bike. And only two cylinders, which translates to on two carbs. Way more Atkins friendly than the XJ's

So you're saying it's like a Diet XJ? I might be able to sell the GF on that...

XS650's are worth a fortune now with everyone and his brother chopping them and cafe'ing them. Post it for sale on thechopperunderground.com or chopperfix.com forums for 2.5 times what you pay and watch the offers come rolling in!!!

Kinda of odd maybe, but locally there have been more XS's than XJ's posted for sale on Criagslist.

    HAHA!! MINE!!

Mine, mine, mine, mine and MINE!! 8)

Well, almost anyways... I'm picking it up on Monday.

First thing I'm gonna do is put some less dorky-looking bars on it. Flat bars or superbike style? Then I'll see what I have for shocks to bring the back end down to a reasonable height for the GF and then...

Oh. I guess I should get it running first. But THEN I'm gonna start playing around with it.

I've been trolling the 650rider site and checking out some member's rides. I'm really liking the flat-tracker look.

Thanks Danno! I'll have a look at those too.

Marine. Thanks for the encouragement. It's a great price for sure, even if it hasn't been started for a year or two. It looks like it won't take too much work to get it up and running.

And here's a short vid of it running after a bit of work this afternoon. Please note the conspicuous absence of dorky pul-back bars. Took a little bit of creative cable-routing to lose the slack left by the lower bars... Ripped it up and down the street a few times after some adjustments.
