Im new to the site, so if this is posted in the wrong area, sorry.

I have a 1985 Maxim X which i purchased 2 months ago. It was in really nice shape from what i could tell, 36,xxx miles and the engine threw a rod and blew out 2 holes in the engine casing. Its my 1st bike and I love it to death, but nobody around here is able to help me. Does anyone on this board know where i can find another engine for this bike? Im very very frustrated and any help would be appreciated.

An obvious source would be eBay.

Beyond that ... Google "Motorcycle Salvage" and find a Salvage Company that's connected to the network of Cycle Salvage places and call them on their 800 Number or inquire by email.

If you do a search online ... be SURE to indicate exactly what you need.

You don't want to get a air cooled engine if you need a liquid cooled mil and vice versa.

Rick, it's an X. Of course it's liquid cooled.

Now I *am* worried. This makes three instances I can recall of the X throwing a rod. What the hell is it with these engines?

If you dont have any luck getting rid of it here, and you dont want to fix it, then just part it out on ebay. You may find you get more in pieces than you paid for the whole thing. As for your poll, you need to post some pics. What kind of shape is the thing in? You'll eventually find and engine for sure, but what else you got to work on the bike even when it's running again? Only you can weigh that one out.

Also, will a 700N engine mount on the X model without mods?

Where are you located, SF? I'm sure there are plently on here who would love to take it off your hands, it's just a question of how close they are. Failing that, parting out is an option but a lot of work and I think it's a shame to break up a nice bike like that. Engines do turn up if you're patient enough to wait.

Do you have pictures of it?

And I call dibs if you're in Eastern Ontario or Western Quebec!

Hey maximumX, can a 700N motor bolt up to the X models? That would def increase the number of engines he could pick up.

Don't know for sure, Trey, but I doubt it. But even if it's not an easy swap anything can me *made* to fit.

    Spinalator... I WANT!!

dang that motor is 45 min or so from my house. Hmm I wonder if the left side crank cover is in good shape?? One of the 2 PO's layed my x down on the left side. So I eventually need a mirror, both left turn signals, and crank cover. All in due time I guess.

For that price I would make a Maxim X Shifter kart. Yummy!
