I have just changes oil and filter on my 1980 650 and I put in two quarts then ran it for about 1 minute and shut it down (on center stand) let it set for 5 minutes checked level through sight glass it was low I was told it would take 3.2 quarts with filter change to top it back off. Is that correct because after doing that I ran it through the gears on the stand and shut it down to check it again. And there was no oil in the sight glass how long does it take to settle back down and is it common to show no oil in the sight like that. I am confused all the help I can get will help. After setting for now ten minutes I can barley see a bubble at the top of glass is this correct? Thanks in advance.

I have never looked at it running but 10 minutes is the recommended wait time to check it. Barely seeing a bubble sounds right.

When I did mine I filled it - ran it - waited 10 minutes and topped it off. Level hs been fine. I always check it at least weekly

But does 3.2 quarts seem correct to you.

Haynes says 5.6 pints which if my math is right is 2.8 quarts I purchased a gallon jug of oil so 3 plus or minus sounds about right I have about a quart left over.

My understanding is that too much oil winds up in the air filter. Your level sounds about like mine. I just found out last night I have gas in my oil so it's carb time. One thing after another....

Your case will hold 2500ccs at a change (about 2.6 quarts). Don't overfill, cleaning up oil from overpressurized seals is a chore.

plus1 on Robert's post. It's easy to overfill, even if you're checking the glass, then it wants to blow oil on your filter, out your valve cover gasket, wherever. You'll have to add small amounts once you're visible in the glass and if you don't see a bubble don't cheat and lean the bike a couple of degrees and say "oh there's the bubble, close enough" Don't ask
