Restoring Yamaha lettering?

I have recently purchased a 1983 Seca 900. The "Yamaha"'s on the gas tank sides are losing their gold from wear. Has anyone restored these or are new ones available from the dealer still? Thanks

I saw a kit on e-bay from restoring gold tank badges under XJ 750 search or check with Charcal to see what he has.

 

Dealer, no, at least not on-line. You might ask if you have a long-time Yamaha dealer in your area, he might have NOS. eBay, be prepared to pay $$$. Chacal (info@XJ4ever.com) has CLOSE replacements available depending on the style you have. You can also get reproductions from http://www.reproductiondecals.com but they are likewise not cheap. There was a thread here not long ago where someone used gold coach tape and laquer to do a respectable restro on their tank badges. A search in General or Chat should turn it up. I plan on trying that myself one of these days.

 

One spot you could try is a place that supplies and makes ribbons for show winners at big events. They use a thin gold type foil to print the lettering on ribbons. Not sure that the product is adaptable to this application, but it could be a starting point.

It comes as a two layer tape - foil and backing - and gets fed through a small heated stamping press. The press has a die in the shape of the lettering or logo needed, but the foil could possibly be rubbed on by hand and lacquer-finished. Worth a shot and I am sure that a foot of the stuff won't be too pricey.

 

I re-covered these with 6mm coach line / auto pin stripe.

Wizard the tape looks great - did you have to cover it with a lacquer or something? I may take a stab at redoing my badges.

 

I did the same, but with a chrome tape. They came out rather good. I still need to do the tank badges, but the side cover badges look really good. I developed a technique for doing this and will share it once I'm done... for those that are interested.

i did lacquer the whole thing, but not essential.

 

do you have to remove the badges?

if so how do you do it without destroying them?
