I am riding a stock 1982 yamah maxim xs400j . the exhaust on it is shot, i was told that i could get some harley sportster mufflers, my question stems from a comment from a guy I know.

has anyone experianced bent valves from back pressure caused by changing to the harley mufflers??? Is it even possible?

Check with PainterD, He has a set of Sportster mufflers on his Bobber. It sounds nice and the Harley muffs went right on with little mods.

He did say he had to re-jet as they are not as restictive as stock mufflers.

I just bought some turn out mufflers from Dennis Kirk. I will be installing them on my 650 this weekend and will let you know how it works.

The general view is that the collector provides all the back pressure needed, thats not to say you won't have to tweak the carbs some.

OK guys here they are. they sound great and pushing the tips back 6 inches took the noise away from my ears.

Those mufflers must be off of an FLH. I have the ones from a Sportster which are a bit smaller. I suspect they sound about the same however. I like the sound of them. Not very loud like but just enough low rumble I wanted.
I haven't aken any recent photos of mine since I made the last few mods mufflers, Sportster seat and bobtail luggage rack) so I can't post any pics for you just yet. PD

I just see too many people running loud exhaust on inline fours around here and it just gets too annoying, especially at higher RPMs. Yes, I had louder exhaust on mine for a short time, but found it just wasn't the sound I wanted to listen to all day long on my journeys. After experimenting with several different makes and styles of mufflers,(Vance & Hines, Cobra, Jardines and 4-into-1 Mac system) I found the Harley tapered mufflers the best sound of all.

Well I bought some emgo turnouts and put the right side on, started the bike and promptly turned it off. These are stupid loud. I'm actually really pee'd off because the catalog makes NO indication that you would be just as well off running straight pipes. They're goin back tomorrow and a call to Dennis Kirk is in order to find out which one of the pipes are actually mufflers and which one only the illusion of such.

I notice that your centre stand hangs low in your after exhaust mod pic. Is this correct is it a problem?

I have put some sportster muffs on my xj650 Maxim but the new arrangement is not working out well with the centre stand. It hangs too low but I don't want to sacrifice the stand.

The stand does not retract fully and scrapes on curves. I am thinking I am going to have to go back to the drawing board on this one. I like the idea of moving the muff tips back to get the sound down, perhaps that'll help with the stand issue too.

Any one have any advice or experience to share on this ?

    Thanks,

I ordered a set of Dunstal knockoffs from old bike barn on monday. They should be a bit quieter than the Emgos. I'll let ya know how they work when I get them on.

The problem was the center stand arm didn't go around the muffler untill i used a die grinder and shaved it about 1/16th of an inch and now it retracts like it should. seems the mufflers I got were not sportster they are FLH

Here's mine after I got her ready for a road trip (saddlebags, windshield, etc.) The mufflers work great with the bags and aren't close enough to be worried about getting the bottom of the bags hot. I like the sound too. They have a lttle rumble to them, but are quiet enough to ride off in the early morning to work without waking the neighbors.

how are you guys mounting these...don't sporty muffs mount on the same side? wouldn't one of the mounts be upside down?

I'm not sure what model mine came off of, because I bought them at a swap meet. Both mufflers are identical with mounting tabs in the middle of each muffler. They mount directly to the back of the collector (where the 4 headers pipes go into) and hand from the rear foot peg bolts with hanger brackets I made myself.
