First of all, a big hello to everybody from the Netherlands (or Holland if you like), knowing that, you may excuse me for my abuse of the English language ;)

I own since a week a '82 Xj 650 Seca that somehow in 1996 was imported from Canada (indeed strange)

I'm gonna give tomorrow a nice service to the bike as the guy that sold it to me had a quite funny idea of servicing it (wrong spark plugs, oil changed but not the filter, etc..)

I'm gonna replace also the Cardan/Shaft drive oil but as i have no owner manual, i have no idea of how much i will have to refill. Can anyone give me a tip?

Thanx and ride nicely your XJ's!

    Andreas

refill to the top of the threads of the fill/inspection hole. Of course this is the lower side as it is at an angle. Make sure your bike is level when checking/filling.

Thanx a lot to both of you!

I must admit that i was getting doubtful because of the "mysterious cap" that is on the top, as i'm really a newbie of shaft drive.

    (BTW...what is intended for?....jeez i'm really a noob ;) )

I could be wrong but I am told it is a vent to let off fumes and pressure from heated oil.

    That is indeed a vent.

    Andreas, Welcome!
Glad to have you aboard. My mother is from Rotterdam.
If I remember right, you need about 0.7 qts in the rear drive (I should be pretty close on this one).
This is rather irrelevant as you only need worry about filling the sump until oil starts to drip out of the fill hole. You have found the drain plug located under the drive housing right? The fill plug is on the side, sort of level with the axle (actually just below it as shown in your photo).
The cap on top of the drive unit is indeed a vent, no need to mess with it.
Good luck with your new bike, I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Thanx also for the welcome, we can say we're nearly from the same neighboord (although my blood is Italian ;) )

Yeah, i found in a matter of 1 second both filling and drain plug,as i already wrote i was just a little bit confused by the vent on the cap.

    Then 0,7 qts...about 0,65 l,ok with a 1 litre W 80 i'm done.
