Hi all! On Independence Day, I acquired myself a bone-stock '85 Maxim with 26k on the clock. It's a clean bike and was / is well-cared for. I myself have put on about 300 miles since then and have noticed a problem developing slowly.

When it's stone cold from sitting overnight, I can get it to start without the choke. No problem there. The problem developes after riding it and it reaches operating temp. If I come to a complete stop (as in waiting for a traffic light to turn), I have a hard time keeping the bike running. It seems like the idle needs to be bumped up a bit as it *appears* to idle aroung 700 to 800 rpm. I say this because I have to keep bumping the throttle to keep the RPM up to prevent the bike from stalling out.

As long as I'm riding, everything is fine! Very responsive on the throttle and no problems. Only when I come to a stop to idle.

Anyone have any ideas where to start with this issue? I'd love to nurse it along until fall so I can keep a ridin'!

    Any advice welcomed.

once the bike is hot & you turn the idle screw to bring the revs to 1050, what happen next?

I'll give that a try. I'm REALLY gun-shy around carbs after having messed up a few bikes in my younger days...so I have yet to study where the idle screw is. Is it on the left or right side (while sitting on the bike). Thanks.

On mine it is in the middle between the 2 inside carbs, on the bottom side, pointing towards the back of the bike. It's a little hard to get to when the bike is hot, but not impossible.

Jim, thanks for the reply. Is it a thumb screw? Sorry for all the questions, Have a member here sending me a CD of the service manual. Until then, gotta ask. Thanks.

Yes, it's a thumb screw directly between the #2 and #3 carbs on the bottom. You will need to put a towel or rag down between your hand and the engine if hot or it gets real uncomfortabel REAL fast!
