my bike is leaking oil from the bolt hole. i tried to tighten the bolt only to find it stripped.

i have tried rtv black (on threads and around bolt head) but i only let it dry 2 hours and it didnt work. i just redid it and will let it set for around 24 hours

does anybody have any suggestions on what to do......i dont really want to try and tap it since i have no idea what to do and dont wanna frick it up any further. if thats the only option ill look into it.

    thanks

Well I would suggest retapping if possible - if not you can use a helicoil. Works great and not too hard.

Not sure if there is anything else you can do....

i think there are threads that arent stripped out above the stripped ones. the hole is a lot deaper than the bolt is long. the store was closed today before i could get too it but im going to stop by and pick one up and try it.

if that doesnt work ill spend the $35 and get the helicoil

can the oil pan be removed without removing the engine? I know the exhaust will have to come off but im not with my bike right now to take a look at it. thanks

Invader, there are oversized drainplugs available at most well stocked auto parts stores. Cheaper than a heli-coil and may last you years. Just start saving up for the heli-coil because some day you will need it done.
I'm not sure if you can pull the pan, Anyone?

It's not the drain plug but one of the allen wrench headed bolts that holds it on. I found a longer replacement that works great...... The first 3 threads were completely gone...so much they came out with the bolt.

I would still like to know about removing the oil pan just incase i ever need to though.

    Thanks

The easiest fix for this predicament is to install an Over-sized Self-Tapping Oil Drain Plug.

There are a few places on the web that make these SPECIFICALLY for Aluminum Cases.

Search Google and find one that supplies them in Metric sized replacements.

All you have to do is get the Self Tapping Drain Plug lined-up nice and straight and screw it in the existing hole.
As it enters the Case, its design cuts new threads for itself.

Unless I'm missing something we are talking about 2 different things. I'm talking about the 6m-1.0 bolts that hold on the oil pan. I found out the threads are cut deeper than the stock bolts go and go longer bolt. Problem solved, but that one question remains can i remove the oil pan with the engine still installed?

Please don't take what i said as being rude or ungrateful as it was not m intention

    My mistake!
There was a stripped Oil Drain Plug in another Thread.
I just got the matter confused.

I've never removed a Sump without the Engine being out.
I really don't know if it will come out of there with the Engine NOT out.

Then, take in to consideration ... the mating surfaces will need to have a sealant applied when you reinstall it ... and, any struggle would likely disturb the bead of sealant and offer a place that might leak.

I was worried about the same thing when trying to reinstall. I believe the problem is fixed though as it leaked none setting last night or when i rode it a little while.

It still smoked a little bit but i imagine that is just oil that didnt get cleaned off the exhaust and will burn off shortly. I tried a degreased but it's probably in some crevices somewhere.

    Thanks again for the help.

I'm sorry as well, I understood you had a case of the common oil-drain plug strip-out. Glad you got it under control.
