I broke my u-joint yesterday on a ride and looking for a replacement. Does anyone know if the u-joints off other Yamaha fit the Maxim X? :(

Hey Tracker, I should have a good used U-joint available for your bike, just send me a PM. XJ700's and 900's use the same joint, all other models use smaller one.

Tracker mind if I ask how many miles you have on the bike? I have 24k and at the moment I have the swing arm off. The U joint doesn't have any play but is looser moving it on one of it's axis than the other. I am contemplating replacement as well. If you need or want I can scan in and email you some info from the Yamaha service manual I have for the 85 X. It will be tight as I will be going out of town Tues Eve or Wed morning but i should be able to get it done.

Uh ohh I just looked on an online Fische it appears the U-joint comes as one peice from yamaha with the yokes Ouch 276.53+ tax umm Ok I think I am waiting on mine now.

Two hundred seventy six dollars fifty-three cents.
    Oh my Lord!

What ever happened to the day when you just rebuild the U-Joint with a set of new Bearings and some new Circlips to hold them in place?

You looked around in the aftermarket yet?
Nobody makes U-Joints for Tuning-Fork Shafties?

    That stinks!
I must have done a few dozen on the MGB I had way back before Cell phones and iPods!

As best I can tell, the u-joints on these bikes are NOT rebuildable, which is really, really odd......

I looked at mine in the shop yesterday and instead of clips they(yamaha) peened over in four places the steel of the yokes to hold the caps on. I suppose you could get one out but it would be really hard not to twist the little yokes while doing so. I am also sure the caps would be toast as well. Nope I have not checked aftermarket I just went to a web fische and checked it out thinking I oculd get Tracker a part number or that it wouldn't be too bad $$ wise. I careful hand and a dremel could probably clear the peens and push out the caps if someone had a replacement available.

Try pressing them out, if that dont work, you could probably mill them out. I've rebuilt I-shafts that were staked like that.

Only problem, in my case, is it's messed up too bad to recover (So I'll need a new or used one)
