    Hello,

My 1982 Maxim has developed some leakage on the left and right side covers...clutch and main cover i guess...I believe that the covers are slightly warped...I am planning on trying to fabricate some gaskets out of 1/8" cork to see if that helps...

Just curious if anyone has tried this before? Should pressure be a problem for the Cork?

    Any input will be appreciated...

    Thanks,

    Jon

I wouldn't use cork. Gasket material is inexpensive and works much better. Autozone carries a rubberized FelPro material that is ideal for making your own gaskets.

First of all what kind of bike do you have? Some models require a rubber gasket and I dont' think you can make one of those because at least some if not all like this have a camshaft plug right on the gasket. But either way I wouldn't suggest it. The advice stated above is good for that type of gasket.

Sorry...it is an 82 MAxim 650/750 hybrid...and I am not replacing the valve cover gasket, just the side covers..i.e. the one below the generator on the left and the right side cover.

Chadwickm: I had completely forgotten about the gasket materials sold in CSK/Murrays and Autozone...thanks for reminding me...

    we'll see what happens...

oil will leak from the side covers if you overfill the crankcase. (Dont ask how i found that out.)
