I just bought this bike from a guy who had it and said it had electrical issues he couldn't repair which I quickly resolved with a battery charge and a can of electrical cleaned and a fluid check. I got it running. However, one of the carbs the 2nd from the left seems to be dumping fuel and since it was sitting for 1.5 years i am not surprised. I am an automotive tech/ hotrod builder and I am very familiar with auto carbs like holley, carter edelbrock etc. However, not so much with these carbs. Do these work similar where the problem is most likely a stuck float or ? Any input on where to start would be good. I am going to take them apart and clean and rebuild them regardless but I would like to diag as much as possible before I disassemble them.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

That sounds like a stuck float to me.

Do a search for a thread titled Carb Cleaning - The Whole Nine Yards. It's a great write up on cleaning the XJ's carbs.

Look in the XJ FAQ Suggestions forum.

Simple answers from an experienced mechanic new to XJs as well, just not as new--yes, they work the same sorta...did you ever deal with the old SU or Stromberg side-draft carbs, with the "piston pots" on top? These (CV) carbs work pretty much the same way although quite a bit better. As far as floats and float bowls go, conventional technology there and you probably have a stuck float or a piece of crud in between the needle and its seat.

Like I said I am familiar more with domestic carbs like Rochester, Carter, Holley etc. I did do work on a 1970 something Jaguar Vanden v-12 with strombergs (which are the carbs that you are refering too) Miserable to tune the first time. especially since they have different tunes for different seasons. . . Never again.

    thanks for the info
