Is there a collector in the exhaust for the 86 XJ700? I'm trying to figure out if my bike has a full system on it or just slip-ons. I have 2 sets (left and right obviously) of 2 into 1 pipes. Nothing under the engine. Can any other 85XJ700 owners out there tell me if this is correct or not.

Yes there is, your bike should have 4 individual header pipes, a 4-in/2-out collector, and of course the two single can mufflers........

Not on mine. It's a bad picture but you can kind of see the two into 1 straight back to the cans. No collector.

If you don't have terrific pick up, it's likely the carbs weren't re-jetted to accommodate that 2 into 1. From what I've read so far, the collector box is important for how the 700 is set up, and the optimal system for performance is a 4 into 2.
    (but I'm new;-)

Right and from having ripped the carbs apart according to Rick's instructions, I can tell you I have all stock jets. I love PO's. So I think what I'm going to do is attempt to trade or buy a full stock exhaust for this bike. If anyone would like a full system for an 85 xj700N, I'm willing to trade you for a stock exhaust (including the headers and collector). This bolts right up to the existing mounts and has a pretty decent sound. I just don't want to open the can of worms that is rejetting, I'd rather go back to stock. I'll repost this in the for-sale section too.

what are you experiencing LBN? if you still have the stock airbox (even without) jetting isn't that bad of an ordeal it just takes some time. Have you done some plug chops to see if you are too lean or running rich?? Jets are relatively inexpensive even if taking the carbs off and on is a pain. more than likely you won't need to go but 1 or two sizes different the rest of the tuning sequence is the same. One you get it nailed down you will be good to go. You just have to take the time to do proper plug chops in various rpm ranges to see where you ned the more fuel. Granted there are only two carbs on most snowmobiles but I have done this numerous times on sleds as I just can't leave things alone. I did a bigbore on my current sled, then reed valves(they act as intake valves) higher comp head. It is just time consuming taking notes, testing things out until you get it right.

I have had three x's and one regular xj700. I go far out of my way to go back to the stock exhaust. My buddy has the xj700 now and he has a mac on it and besides sounding a bit too robust, it doesn't run quite right. I've come across three stock exhausts all for about $150 ea. One came from Mass where I got dumb lucky with an ad on CL (I'm in VA), the other came from Jim Wrixon in Cali, and the last one was a combination of the ones left over. I've got two sets of spare mufflers, one crushed collector and one that was a refab. They run better stock imo. OH, and if you find an exhaust for either bike, they are swap ready. I've taken them from xj700s and put them on x's and vice versa, even though the part #'s are different.

They sure did a nice job of fabing those pipes!

    TOO BAD!

I'd find the stock exhaust system too and as was said before I'd be reading my spark plugs meanwhile, who knows... you might find them to be running ok and save a few bucks....
If it's a bit rich on idle I'd try to colortune it and see if it's ok then....
If you get it in on idle then you need to read those plugs and see where it's at running down the road..... maybe ok!?

    GOOD LUCK
