I have a tank, seen above, from a 82 xj750 maxim to fit my 83 xj750 maxim. The new tank has a hole that looks to be for a sending unit. Is there a way to make this work?

    Yes.

You can make a blanking plate and o-ring to block the sending unit off.

You can contact user Chacal and he can sell you a premade blanking plate.

You can have a shop (if you don't have the expertise) braize in a plate to shut the hole.

You can buy a used sending unit and either add or make a fuel gauge. http://xjbikes.com/forums/threads/diy-led-digital-fuel-gauge.25289/
