After being on this site for a few weeks, and looking at lots of pics online, I have decided that the original look of the Seca is much better than the "modifications" applied by previous owners. I do have a few questions:
    1. Are the headlight buckets the same between XJ models for that year? (except for the turbo Seca, which is what I believe my light to be)

    2. Will any turn signals fit the stems as long as they are 27w bulbs? I like the rectangular lights on bigfitz's '83 550, and if I uploaded the pic correctly you can see the dinky, almost invisible units on my bike, front and rear.

    3. Same question about the rear fender, mine's a little shorter (read "hacked off") than stock.

    4. Does anybody know the best place to get replacement tank emblems? I like the color of the bike so I won't be painting.

    5. I don't believe Yamaha had planned for the wiring to be sticking out from below the headlight, am I missing a fork brace or something?

    6. If I'm missing anything not mentioned so far I would appreciate y'all letting me know.

Lots of snow in the mitten so I'll have a few weeks to work on these things as well as some of the mechanical things already planned.

    Thanks guys! Love this site!

1: No, unfortunately they're not. The 650 Seca originally had an 8" round halogen light unit, unique to IT and the XV920R (in this country.) Most of the other Yamahas that had round lights had a 7" unit, like the 550s and the 650 Maxim. The 750s had square headlights, which is what it looks like somebody installed on yours.

The "proper" headlight for your bike is a bit hard to find, the best place is probably this site. When they do show up on eBay they tend to be expensive. The 7" round units are very common, however.

2: Pretty much. The signals I used on my '83 are aftermarket Yamaha "pattern" (FJ/FZ, Radian) signals I got from chacal. I did need to install the correct 27W lamps in them.

3: eBay. And you're missing your little "tail section" fairing (bolts to the bottom rear of the seat.)

4: chacal (XJ4Ever) has the proper, silver, adhesive "YAMAHA" badges for the tank.

    5: Yes, there's a rather utilitarian-looking trim piece that's missing.

    Here's a link to a really good on-line parts fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/p ... amaha.aspx

Here's a pic of my complete and original (but very grubby) 650 Seca, you can see most of the details we're discussing in the pic, like the big headlight:

Thanks for the info Fitz. Greatly appreciated!
Does the 7" round need any modification/shims to fit the 8" round bracket?
Also included right rear quartering shot, as you can see the almost non-existant signals and fender not going below plate bracket.
I noticed yours has grab handles also, those would be very useful.
Anything else seem to be missing or completely un-original?
Not looking to restore completely, just make it look less "fabricated" for lack of a better word. Thanks again!

By the way, if you're in the middle of the mitten this summer hit me up if you want someone to ride with

thanks Shangovi, isn't that headlight ugly though? and as far as the signals go, I believe that something 1/6th the size of a car needs to make itself very noticeable to said car, and these lights are smaller than I have on my bicycle!

Looks like the PO was just trying to stay legal, not alive! Hey, don't knock the square headlights ok? Some of us are sensitive to that.........but you're right, sicking out there uncovered, it's ugly as heck! LOL If you replace it with a 7", you'll be able to buy a replacement bulb at Kmart for $3.99!!

I did get an HID off ebay for 4 bucks, and the headlight looks good on the 750, just not liking it on this bike, plus the 750 has a dual, which makes it look cleaner. I'll definitely be looking for a 7" to replace it. Anyone know if there is a way to tell which bike this bucket is from?

I love the comically huge headlight on the Seca, not sure why anyone would modify that willingly. However 7" headlights are plentiful and would certainly be cheaper to install. Pretty sure I've seen universal 7" headlights, so while some modifications may be necessary, it shouldn't be too hard to get one on there.
