    What steps must be taken before starting a 1983 xj750 setting unused for 10 years?

    check oil level see if it is overfull may have fuel in it. drain and change oil and filter.
    remove air filter see if any critters have made a nest in it. clean up after them make sure any nest matrial has not gone down stream

    drain any fuel in tank look for rust. add a fuel filter.

    carbs will need to be cleaned as they may be gummed up and clogged

    you could try to start with starter fluid.

    you should ohm out the ignition system to see if it is in spec
    ohm out the charging system to see if it is in specyou will find specs here

    check valve clearances to see if in spec

    after bike starts
    rebuild entire brake system
    SAFETY ALERT Drum rear brake bike owners please take a look
    check and lube/replace wheel bearings

    then you will want to drain and replace fork oil.

    just a note a 1983 xj 750 is an XJ750K your avatar photo looks like an 83 round speedo face and tubular bars

    an XJ750J is an 82
    do you have an atari cluster or round speedo and tach

    just to be sure check vin on frame and motor

    XJ550H, Thanks. I did notice the cluster and bars in the "J" suffix manual don't match my round ones. Going out to get all the #'s from the bike. Then look for the "K" suffix manual on this site.
    Oh and thanks k-moe and XJ550H for the links. so much easier than searching Google and YouTube! I love this shit!

    VIN check link verified everything is correct. But, no J or K suffix letter.
    Copied and pasted this from the site: "22R00 = 1983 XJ750 Maxim USA".
    Should I assume your Suffix letter "K" is correct?

    Yes.
    TECH TOPIC: Model ID and VIN's

    "COUNTRY: USA

    MODEL NAME: XJ750K
    STREET NAME: 1983 XJ750 Maxim
    MODEL ID CODE: 22R
    FRAME ID: 22R
    SERIAL NUMBER STARTS AT: 000101

    USA MSRP PRICE: $ 3,299.00"

    The K suffix on the model name denotes a machine produced for the 1983 model year.

    "In naming their bikes, Yamaha would refer to bikes by their MODEL NAME (i.e. XJ550, XJ650, etc.) and then add a---you guessed it---a LETTER CODE to the end of the model name, as such:

    XJ550H
    XJ750J
    XJ900RK

    Unfortunately, the letter codes used in this manner bear no relation to the letter codes used in the 17-position VIN schemes.

    Here's the Yamaha letter codes:

    A = 1974
    B = 1975
    C = 1976
    D = 1977
    E = 1978
    F = 1979
    G = 1980
    H = 1981
    J = 1982
    K = 1983
    L = 1984
    N = 1985
    S = 1986"

    Got it. I now have the correct manual. It is the XJ750K-MK-ML service manual.
    I will update my signature. Specifically, "XJ750K" (Maxim).
