What tanks will bolt on to an 83 maxim 400?
What seats will bolt on to an 83 maxim 400?

    Situation is this;
I would like a larger tank, though not really necessary. More so I could go farther without having to fill up. That and I would like to have a second tank for when I plan on painting the original/vice versa.

I am more curious about the seat though. I have an original king/queen seat on the maxim and the problem is that my big butt rubs into the queen portion of the seat. Gets sore on longer rides and because I am a bigger guy, I want to sit farther back on the seat, but can't because of the rise on the seat.

Would one of those flat seats bolt up to the maxim frame/airbox?

Heh, Our Frames are different, we have the single backbone instead of a standard type frame.... so basically a larger tank would most likely involve a good fabricator to make you one.

Same issue with the seat, because the desing is different than common XS's or XJ's.....

I was thinking of finding somone with a basket case parts bike with a tron seat and doinng a custom seat useing that...otherwise it's back to fabbing one up....

Darn, I didn't consider the mono shock design would figure that much into tanks and seats. Thanks for the confirmation! Looks like I get to learn how to fab something up as well!

I was browsing Kijiji today and the started heading westward pricing Seca's across the country for a comparison.....

Found a Seca 400 in Ontario where the owner said he replaced the tank with one from an XS1100, so may be an option......
At least for tanks, not sure if they're larger.... just wanted to mention it....
    Off to search that now

20-24 litres compared to our 15 .... so not bad...

Why not just get a seat recontoured to your specs if you like the bike?

When I rebuilt my '81, I had the stock seat recovered by Sargent's Cycle (in Florida but they won't rip you off shipping) and it's fine. They did a great job (check my gallery.)

When I personalized my '83, I had a seat recontoured by Sargent's and "upfoamed" with their Atomic Foam and it was well worth it (and it wasn't horribly expensive.) They can do about anything you want. My seat looks stock, but is taller and wider and has less of a 'step.' Excellent workmanship and good people to deal with.

If you don't mind spending a little bit for something that will last, these guys are definitely the way to go: http://www.sargentcycle.com/custserv.htm

SUPER COMFY. The welt matches the maroon in the stripes.

Hehe, fitz will use any excuse to post another pic of that beautiful 550 :)

I may have scored an extra seat pan for my next project... was chatting to a guy locally that had a couple of old parts bikes he had dismantled to check on a replacement ignition switch (may have one) and he has a rough seat I can snag cheap :) Coming up 1 freshly covered seat with integrated topbox :)
