    Hi all,

Having some idle trouble with my Xj650. Took my carbs to church a few weeks ago, put my pilot screw 3 and a quarter turns out, and the bike ran great. Idled at 1050 rpm, very smooth etc.

Fast forward to the other day when I tried to start the bike again after some work on the brakes, and I'm idling at 5k rpms. Took the carbs off, readjusted the idle screws again to 3 and a quarter turns, turned the big pilot screw in-between the 2nd and 3rd carbs all the way in, and I'm still at 4k rpms. I replaced all of my intake boots (except for the first boot because I had a stuck Allen head screw) when I first bought the bike, and I haven't messed with them at all since the 1050 rpm idle. I'm wondering if maybe there's a leak on that first boot? Would a leak in just one boot still bring the idle that high? Still doesn't fully explain the problem because even with an old first boot I had a solid idle.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

    simple things first
did you bind up the throttle cable when working on brakes?
throttle cable hooked to throttle linkage or switched with choke cable?
cable lubed? throttle tube clean and lubed with graphite? (may be sticking)
is throttle linkage binding/stuck on head?
    throttle cable adjusted properly?
sounds like you turned the throttle stop screw (idle screw between 2 and 3) in to far start backing it out.
    did you bench sync carbs?
3 turns out for mixture screws may be better.

spray carb cleaner around boot 1 see if idle changes do at nipple, mating surface and body.

you could use left handed drill bit to drill head off of allen screw that may turn screw out for you. this will leave a nub to grab and turn after using kroil on the bolt for a few days.

did you wet set the carbs?

I'll take a look at the choke cable assembly today... if it's sticking would I need to make it tighter or looser? I'll also put the screws in another half turn or so. I dry set my carbs but that was before I had it idling well, would that somehow get out of alignment? Thank you!

if choke system is sticking then fuel may flow . you need to make sure the plungers are all the way down when choke is off.
