Hi People! I have an '81 Midnight Maxim 650 that I have been working on restoring all winter, bought it last fall, and am finally getting to the engine! I am going to attempt to swap the upper end (crankshaft, jugs, pistons, valve train) from my 750 YICS engine to my 650 non-YICS case because of a backwards transmission on the 750 case.

Any input on my crazy scheme would be much appreciated!

The rest of my project includes transplanting the fork and brake assembly from the 750 (I like the dual brakes), switching the "old" handlebar controls for the "new" style on the 750, and replacing the 4-2 exhaust with a used 4-1 my friend had. I also sandblasted and repainted the frame and all the metal accessories, tank and side panels will be later.

I have one other question that may be stupid.. my friend has and '82 and ALL of the valves leak. we were wondering if our bikes really do need a lead substitute in the fuel. Are there any other common issues that prevent the valves from closing? The head is off the bike, so it's not timing or anything to do with the cams.
