    Hi all!

I am new to this site and am wanting to buy an XJ Maxim to restore over the winter months. There is what appears to be a very beaten up and slightly modified XJ650 Maxim for sale and I have also been offered an incomplete - but what's there is nice - Seca. What are the differences (if any) below the skin of these two bikes? My idea is to buy both and build one complete and great looking bike from these two donors.

I would guess that mechanically they are identical but was wondering whether the frames are the same? Are the seat frame, forks and suspension, electricals and other bodywork components the same or at least interchangeable?

Any advice you can give me would be great! :)

    Thanks from an XJ Newbie!

    Peter

In a word, no. The forks are different (may even be a different diameter) although the steering head MAY be the same; the frame shows a different part number. Your best bet is to have a "wade" through the Yamaha parts fiche for both bikes and see what you get. If anything like the 550's there are a lot of "unseen" differences. I'm not saying a "hybrid" isn't possible, quite the opposite. It's just that it won't be quite as easy as you're hoping for. Thanks for the response and very useful link. It turns out that both are Seca's and I am hoping to build a Maxim, so perhaps a hybrid / custom is on the cards. If I do decide to do this, I'll post pictures and updates on the site 8O
