A different owner bored into the mufflers to get what he thought was a cool sound. I'd like to return it to the reasonable noise level that Yamaha had in mind. Thought I'd be frugal and repack the mufflers, but with the thin metal bit off the back, I see a much more substantial metal cap, that appears to be welded (or at least soldered) around the inner pipe. I did bend back the chrome part that laps over the outer edges of this cap, but based on what I'm seeing, Yamaha made these so they can't be repacked. Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance.

Stock mufflers don't have packing - they have baffles and are welded closed.

I assume the PO used a long drill bit and drilled through one or more of the internal plates. You might be able to close up the last plate with the right welding equipment or a self tapping screw.

MiCarl, thank you for your response, this makes perfect sense. I think you're right about the last set of holes, but I gotta wonder if the difference would be significant. Looks like the only way to return the bike to its quiet original sound would be muffler replacement.

Re: 700 Maxim, muffler repack - possible?? NEW QUESTION

In the realm of other possible fixes... I saw a 700 Maxim on a classified site, which clearly had the stock muffler from a different model set onto it. My question for those who have more technical knowledge of motorcycle design is, Can stock mufflers from other models be swapped out with reasonably good results as along as the opening to the muffler is the same and it's possible to adapt some sort of bracket/support for the back end of the muffler? thanks in advance :)
