750 Maxim Single Disc Thought?

    Tossing around the idea of reducing the front brakes to a single disc, thoughts?

    It might work okay, the only con that I can think of would be having to make an emergency stop. Would really depend on how well your front brakes work and your riding style. My 85 700Max has dual front brakes that will throw you over the handlebars if you hit them hard at low speed, but if driven fast one disc might not be enough.
    If it was me, I'd leave them like they are. Better to have brakes that work great than brakes that might not work so great. I know that those disc's cover up the rims too much and you would like to see the rims, but it is what it is. It would be nice if you could convert to perimeter brakes like the Buell's had.

    Yamaha often offered some models, like the 550 Seca for instance, with both dual and single discs depending on where they were sold. But that is a "lightweight" bike by comparison, and a single disc brake works fine.

    However, some models, like ALL of the 750s, all came with dual discs. VENTED-rotor dual discs, no less. Probably for a good reason.

    I'm betting Yamaha felt that a 500+lb motorcycle capable of nearly 130mph should have some serious stopping power too.

    I'd keep the dual discs.

    I'm with fitz on this. Big fast bike = big brakes. On the other hand, brakes have improved a fair bit since then. It's possible that some modern replacement would be perfectly fine if single sided. However, even if the new brake is equally strong on a single effort, you might encounter brake fade; plain old rotor mass is pretty much the final determinant of how fast your rotors heat up.

    Okay, thanks for the feedback, overwhelmingly 2 rotors, that's how I'll leave it.

    Another issue - the Master Cyl piston size is different for a single brake - the brakes could end up feeling "too touchy" or some other ill effect.
