81 xj550 maxim- valve lifter to cam lobe clearance

    In reading information on clearance it is saying that these bikes get "tight" over time with the clearance decreasing versus having it increase. Looking for info on how this happens, I am thinking wear on the shims/valve tips and carbon buildup on the valves would increase the clearance?

    The valve seats get slowly tapped deeper into the head.
    The shims do not wear.
    Carbon buildup is minimal, unless something else is very wrong.

    the shim bucket sits directly on top of the valve stem end.

    the cam lobe presses down on the shim pushing valve open then releases

    then just as K-moe said above.
