Have seen a few threads about starter clutch issues. Mine occasionally has the "box of rocks" sound when cold, not hot like everyone else's posts. Have run non-synthetic motorcycle oil since I got it running. Also have seen that the cases have to be split to repair the starter clutch. The starter on the '82 Maxim is sitting on the top of the engine next to the middle gear drive (shaft drive). It looks to be an easy removal. Why do the cases have to be split?

because the starter clutch is inside the cases. it's about four inches diameter and a inch thick and has three springs and rollers that you can't touch or see from the outside. and the bolts to take it apart are on the inside of the cases. you have all winter

Got it. I found an engine schematic and now see the problem.
