Hi, I'm new - will get a proper sig file going soon and all that. I've got an 84 Maxim 400 and I see an 82 for sale on Craigslist that looks good for parts. I'm looking in particular at the carbs and a bonus would be a compatible headlight bracket, among other small things.

Would the carbs work okay on the '84?

    Thanks,

    Al

they made that bike in other markets for years and years after they stopped in the US and Canuckville. Germany has a HUGE 400 twin following.

More than likely it's really an '83, There was no 84 up here, but some license offices put 84 on the ownership cause they're not so SMRT lol.

'82, and '83 and completely compatible with eachother.

Interesting. I had an idea it might have been an '83 til I read Chacal's VIN lesson. 10th digit is an E, hence '84....

Mine is listed as an 84 with the Ministry but production date is 4/83.

most bikes are model yeared the upcoming year when built in the current year. Hence why you could own a 2010 Honda in 2009 etc. etc.

Ah, I knew that about cars for the most part but the bike shop I took it to told me it should have been an 83 as anything listed 1-6/yr is that years model, anything 7-12/yr is the next so I wasn't sure about the bike.

From what I can tell from some research it's irrelevant as the 83 and 84 are the same...I think...I'm still very green with all this.

All the twin Max 400's are the same I think, so everything should work fine

Mine also is stamped 4/83, but then why would the serial number indicate '84? Mine is sequenced 100232, my last one was exactly the same only 66 numbers later, 100298. Quite the coincidence that was.
