    Any specific kit i should buy to rebuild / repair my carbs. Bike hasn't been running properly, just did the valves, checked compression, new spark plugs etc, now i have the carbs off and ready to work on. Any specific guide i should refer to so i can get my carbs straightened up and taken care of? Any specific kit to get the carbs fixed?

    would a "jet kit" be what i need and more? Like, if my carbs are all fked and need parts replaced, could i just buy a jet kit, replace the stuff and i'd also have a better performing carburetor?

    Jet kits do not have the parts to rebuild a carb, just jets and neeldes. They are for re-jetting carbs to accomodate for changes in intake and exhaust.
    What you need are carb rebuild kits, they will have fuel needle/seat and gaskets/o-rings. While you are in there throttle shaft seals are a good idea. I have seen too many carb redos because of bad throttle seals. PM our parts supplier Chacal, just click on the XJforever banner at the top of the page.
    Do a site search for ;
    Church of clean
    Clunk test
    That will give you more ideas on what to expect and look for.

    is there a walk through guide on repairing the carbs or will i be able to tell as i take it apart with what needs replacing etc? Should i have the thing sit in water or something to be cleaned, or what? I have no idea where to begin.

    Click on the XJ engine at the top of this page. Chacal has threads on how to overhaul your carbs.

    I also strongly recommend you invest in a SERVICE MANUAL. Both the factory and aftermarket books cover the "basic" carb service. They just won't admit to the existence of the pilot mixture screws; and replacing throttle shaft seals is not covered.

    However, the basic tear-down is; including the enrichment linkage, etc. The how-to's on this site should be considered as supplements to the manual; not as replacement for one.

    Water won't do you any good (maybe some harm?). You'll need a couple big cans of carb cleaner (I used GUMOUT carb & choke cleaner). You can also get a gallon of carb dip to get the parts super clean (I got one at Wal-mart for $20, can be had at most good auto parts stores). Just make sure you don't soak any rubber or plastic parts. If you're not splitting the rack and replacing the seals then you won't want to put the carb bodies in the carb dip because it can eat up the seals.

    Just tons of carb cleaner and compressed air. soak, scrub, rinse, blow-off, repeat. Study the threads mentioned above for the church of clean and clunk test and you'll be fine. Good luck!

    Keep in mind - I think the compressed air is really a big key to success for these carb rebuilds. You need to dial it up and blow through ALL of the tiny passages to make sure they are spotless and clear of any debris (then soak with some more carb cleaner and blow out some more!). One tiny spec of dirt can clog a fuel passage and cause hours of frustration and headaches for you... no amount of synching or fine-tuning can correct a clogged passage.

    If you don't have an air compressor you really need to get one, borrow one, rent one, or whatever. Good luck!
