I've been searching old threads for this issue but have been unable to locate one that addresses this issue.

So I have an oil leak coming from behind what my Haynes manual calls, "the time plate".

My problem is I cannot remove the allen bolt holding the plate in place. I was wondering if it is possible that this bolt has locktite applied to it from the factory?

I've been doing my best to soak it with pb blaster to no avail. The last thing I want to do is strip the bolt. Is my last option to use an impact driver with a torx bit? I don't own one by my gf's dad does. I just don't want to haul my engine over there to have it done.

Thanks in advance for all the help. This site is amazing for tips and tricks to working on xjbikes!

I'm not sure of the bolt you are speaking of specifically, but try "shocking" the bolt. Smack it with a hammer (a little harder then tap...don't break the cast) a few times. Then try. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. That releases the pressure a bit and you'd be amazed at how easily some bolts come out after that.

Oh I should clarify. Tap it straight in. Not to the left or right. Your just trying to break the male threads from the female threads and all of the pressure is pushing outwards. Shock that pressure back in to break it free.

Here is a pic of said bolt. My manual doesn't say much about it other than you have to remove it to remove the timing plate.

Oh. I put an alan wrench in it and smack it real fast (lefty loosy) with a hammer. I try to beat the spin with the quickness of the hammer. I don't beat everything up with a hammer, but that has worked every time so far for me. Now that may no be the "proper" way to do it, but it works with no damage.

Try typing in "pick-up" or "ignition pick-up" to find info on that. The ignition pick-ups are behind that plate.

Thanks for the advice guys, still no success. Looks like I will have to load the engine into my car and try the impact driver option.

Does any know if there is a gasket behind this screw, if yes, do you know where I could obtain a new one?
