hi everyone! new to the site, need a little help. i have 83 midnight maxim (bad oil leak) and 85 maxim x which is leaking gear oil from the rear gearbox near the drain plug, i did check the plug first...there is also a clicking sound coming from somewhere in the shaft assembly. would the shaft assembly and rear from the 83 work on the 85? they look the same from the outside. how difficult would this swap be?

The final drive gearcase is a direct swap with the exception of the driveshaft. I believe the X uses the slightly longer virago driveshaft.

ok ill have to check on the shaft part #s. in the meantime id like to take care of the leaking gearcase...is there a seal in there that could be blown and how easy is it to take apart

    I believe I was wrong.
A Part # search shows that the driveshaft is exclusive to the 700 Maxim, Maxim X, and 900 Seca

There are oil seals, and o-rings that will not be hard to change.
Inner bearing housing. Unbolts from gearcase housing.
Driveshaft input. Accessed by removing the circlips that hold the driveshaft in place.

thanks mighost for checking. ive decided to replace the whole final drive unit as opposed to rebuilding it myself. was curious in the meantime if the final drive from my 83 xj750mk would work since its a different driveshaft? if it will then i can put it on for now to see if thats where the clicking was coming from. any idea?

85 xj700x (new bike, possibly for my lady?)
