I just joined this site. Last week i bought a 1983 xj750mk midnight maxim with a full touring package. i'm having troubles finding parts for it. i think i need new coils. ive checked for spark and it looks weak. ive seen ads for aftermarket dayna coils anyone know anything about them? im a taller/larger guy and im loooking to get forward controls for it and needed ideas. i cant afford much. this will be my first season as long as i can get it running right.

Dyna Coils would be a great upgrade.
Get the Mounting Kit to make installing them a breeze.

I popped in a new battery and that solved the spark issue. still wont fire though. needing warmer weather to check the petcock and the carbs.

If you HAVE good Spark, ... it narrows-down what to look for.

Do a "Pop / No Pop" Test.

Shoot some Starting Fluid into the Airbox.
    Try it.
If she "Pops" ... Its Fuel Supply or Cold Weather related.
If Starting Fluid will get it Started, ... its the cold.

If it runs a second and dies, ...
You have a Fuel Delivery issue.

    Well, ...

    IF you got Spark.

There's just AIR and FUEL to check-out.
    Starting Fluid got you nothing.
So, lets check the possibility it ain't getting enough Air.

Check the Airbox for Rodents, evidence of former rodents, nesting materials, bees nests, hidden dope stashes or a ridiculously filthy Air Filter.

IF the Airbox ain't it, ... we go to Square One.

    Compression Test!

The results will either set your mind at-ease, or break your heart!

heres an update. air boots are shot. got it to pop with starting fluid. petcock is functioning perfectly in all 3 positions. crack in the vacuum line. i got new gas lines for both to the tank. pulled the carbs out and opened the drains 1/3/4 had fuel and 2 had none. going to open them up with a help on here to figure out whats wrong. local shop has a used set of boots off an old bike that are still in god condition. they're asking $35 is that too much for all 4? did a compression test today and got 120-125 on all 4 cylinders

That's not a bad price for 4 used boots....if they don't have any cracks.

Probe the #2 Drain with a long darning needle and see if the Bowl Drainn is clogged.

I agree, 35-Bucks is a real good deal on Manifolds.

Exercise great caution removing the old Manifolds.
The fasteners are prone to seize (cold-weld).
The Fastener will turn as if it is loosening, but the Cap Screw is actually TWISTING until it snaps.

    Good Luck.
    Be careful.

im working on the carbs right now. tiny bits of paint and rust in them got a full cleaning on my hand. the last owner had someone "rebuild" them last fall. opened them up and o-rings on the tubes are bad. and alot of screws that where almost stripped out. i got them all out. ill let you know how it turns out when i finish putting them back together

I'd love to have that touring kit but I doubt it would bolt up to my 650. Plus trying to ship it would be quite a hassle.
