    Hi folks,

it is been a while. I've been kind of down and out not doing a lot of stuff anywhere let alone biking.

I am finally getting around to getting my 85 Maxim-X up and running. I am sure you don't recall but I was having problems with only two cylinders firing incentive all four. After all sorts of troubleshooting including swapping out coils and tracing wires, etc., I finally concluded that the problem was with the TCI. It is been so long now that I can't remember if I've actually swapped the TCI on the bike or not and I'm pretty sure that I bought two TCI units. My question here is the second TCI I bought was supposed to be for the Maxim-X but is actually for the XJ700N, the air-head model. It is model TID 14 – 44 whereas the correct one as I understand it is TID 14 – 35. So my question is given that both bikes are essentially identical other than one's air cooled and one is watercooled, will the TCI from a 700N work for a 700X?

The next set of problems I'm facing in the process of doing this, is that I had to install an air box because the previous owner had put on pods as well as the exhaust for Harley Sportster which pretty much made the thing run like a dog. This, of course, is why I picked this bike up for a mere $400 after he bought it for $1500 and then spent over a grand taking it to shops before he finally through in the towel and listed it for sale .... In addition he also moderated a bit of the wiring to circumvent the thermostat and just put a switch in for the radiator fan and second to put little LED blinkers on instead of the nice big factory things. I have got the OEM lights that I'm going to put on and I've got a functioning thermostat in there so I can undo that part of his hack job. However in putting things back together I had to drop the engine in order to physically install an air box. In reassembling I find in the main central wiring area that I have a Molex connector that doesn't have anything to which to connect. It is a four wire connection with the following pin out:

Looking at it from the back where the wires go in:

    R/W B/W
    Bl/W B

    (R = Red W=White Bl = Blue B=Black)

The solid black wire is connected to the main negative to which the next item is attached.

I can find nothing to which to connect this this Molex connector. Am I missing a module or something? I don't know if someone has a clue as to what this is supposed to be connected, but I would greatly appreciate any information you might have.

Finally at the main wiring harness juncture next to the battery I have two loose wires which are not connected to anything and I don't know what to do with them. One of them is a black wire connected to the main negaitve trunk. I don't know what exactly the guy was doing there but he had made a cut their and spliced in three wires are actually soldered on to then go off to my believe lights in the back and the third one should certainly are not doing anything. The second one is a kelly green wire coming from the front of the bike down to that same area right in the middle and it has a butt plug connector on the end. I find no loose wires with which to pair it. So again, if anyone has some information as to what to do with either of these wires I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could give.

I am truly looking forward to getting back on the road again, and also spending time with you folks again.

Went back and took a look at the other wires you mentioned; if the "Kelly green" wire you're referring to is what the book calls "dark green", then those two wires go to the right rear turn signal.

    Hi,

Kelly green is bright green, not dark. In the places where this wire is normally exposed, it is dark green. But the part which is normally inside the harness is this lighter green..

    Thanks,

    Mike

Hrmph. Well, back to the diagram, then. Green and Black... I'm seeing something like that coming off the Rectifier/Regulator, but I'm kinda doubting it's our animal. I keep looking, and... oh, there's a likely candidate. Survey says...

    Fuel sender.

    Oh Man,
What's a fuel sender and where is it located?

In the gas tank. On those XJ models with a fuel gauge, it sends a variable signal to the instrument cluster to display the fuel level. On the X, when the fuel level gets low enough, the little red light on the tach starts to glow.

Aha! No wonder I couldn't find a connection. The gas tank isn't anywhere near the bike right now. Thanks!
