trying to get back on the road after a few years off...82 seca 750..let it sit for those few years so carbs were crudded up along with rust in the tank. Long story short everything cleaned up but carbs need to be adjusted...have the gauge but not real cnfident in doing this myself...don't have the yics tool....But I do have an extra 750 midnight maxim engine sitting in the garage...around 6 to 7 k miles on it (po biffed it early on) got most of the parts but the front end and the wheels....willing to trade some of this for help in getting my seca on the road... :?: thanks in advance

You can still get things running fairly well without the YICS tool but you will need a colortune plug. Rickcomatic has an old school guide to tuning the carbs by ear. I would check this out. What gauge are you refering to? If a vacuum gauge then you may xperience some trouble getting the gauge stable enough to set the sync. If you only have one gauge then for get it. You need a set with four. In the links forum in the DIY section are some carb cleaning guides. I would study these and look for anything you may have missed on the carb cleaning. If they areen't right then tuning will be frustrating if not impossible. Which I leved near you, I'd jump on a deal for that Maxim engine!

I built the YICS tool cheaply & easily. There are instructions on this site that do a great job. You'll need a YICS tool anyway as you should set your carbs at least every riding season anyway. I could build you one also. If interested, pm me.

Factory setting for a start is 2.5 turns out. Most here have had better success at 3 turns. Note that we are talking about the pilot mixture screws. The gauges are used for sync. Different screws to be turned there. I usually start with a colortune but some here prefer the sync first. The pilot mixture screws are located next to each choke plunger. Care must be taken when turning them in so as not to seat them hard and damage the fine tip.
The sync is set with 3 screws a the back of the carbs along the throttle shaft line. #3 is hard set and cannot be adjusted. So we usually start at that end and set #4 to #3. Then set the screw on the left sets #1 to #2. The middle screw sets 1 & 2 to 3 & 4.
    Any questions?

Should set the carbs when they were off the bike by using a piece of wire a drill or Tyewrap or something to set the throttle plate to all be cracked open the same amount.
The carb with the throttle idle adj nut is the main carb to match the others to. This will put you in the ballpark!

The idle mixture screws are supposed to be 2 1/2 turns open to start.
The YICS tool will wait for now.

You do definatly need a Colortune

There are a lot of threads in this site about running the carbs

We need to move some copies of all the important carb cleaning, set-up and tuning to a "Everything about Carbs In Here" thread.

Is that a Moderator function ... or, can anybody do that?

Oh ... yea, I read that article about converting over to F/I.

Way too expensive and time consuming for my tastes. Nice bit of engineering; though!
