I planning on yank'in the motor out of the frame to paint and clean things up a bit, the bike did run before i decided to remove the carbs for cleaning.

But the odo showed around 42K on the motor, and since i have to replace about 6 shims, would it make any sence to go ahead and take the head off to do a ring job, and replace the head gasket.

I realy dont want to chase my tail on this thing, but since the motor will be out of the frame anyway for cleaning, would it be worth it to just do the rings, instead of the rest of the motor?

My understanding is that the parts under the head are hard to find (expensive x4). If you have good compression on all 4 cylinders, just check and shim the valves and be done with it. I don't think these motors are supposed to NEED any work on the head (not including checking and shimming valves) for 100k or more if you maintain the bike properly.

In fact if the rings are bad...the usual advice is find another motor and drop it in.

You got the Cart way out in front of the Horse.

You ONLY Service the Bottom end IF it NEEDS it.
    Do a Compression Check.

The ONLY thing you should really NEED at 42,000 is maybe having the Valves Lapped and the Valve Seals replaced.
    A de-carbonization would be automatic above 40,000.

You still got room to go on the Cam Chain which gets replaced at 55,000 - 60,000.

If you are going to go any further than taking off the Head, ... you might as well do the Starter Clutch, HiVo-Chain Guide and make it a New Bike.

Im just bouncing idea's around for now, was'nt real sure what the life span of thiese motors were, probly because im just getting into this type of bike.

Infact when i went to look at the bike, i had no idea about the amount of attenion thiese bikes needed, but it all good, no big deal, im sure if i just do the shims while the motors on the bench, the motor should have no problem making it to 100K with new manifolds and synced carbs.
