I've used it with good results, but have had problems storing the left over mix. It seems to evaporate, or at least the acetone does, even in a closed container. Does anyone mix it and store it or do you just mix what you need each time?

I mix little at a time and store leftover in a baby food jar, the lid has a pretty tight fit on the jar, it works for me. But I can smell the fumes around the jar so it is not 100% safe.

Next time I have an empty container of contact glue cleaner or a small metal container with a good tight cap, i'll keep it for that purpose.

I left some in a plastic spray bottle and that didn't work.

The acetone can would have been fine, but considering that we mix it 50-50 with transmission fluid I would have had to discard half a can of acetone and I didn't want to do that. But I think you are right in that it must be kept in an air tight glass or metal container.

PLastics are sort of porous, no good for long term storage. You need metal or glass.

I heard that the mix works good but must be used immediately after mixing otherwise aceton evaporates and becomes atf only...

My acetone comes in a plastic bottle at the hardware store and it doesn't evaporate in that container. Polypropylene is acetone resistant BTW.

Yep. Plastics have been the standard for most chemical storage for decades. Glass breaks quite easily. Plastics aren't porous, but not all plastics are compatable with all types of chemicals. Storing acetone in the original bottle is ideal; storing it in a polyester container will get you a dissolved container and a puddle of acetone.

Fun fact: Your liver makes small quantities of acetone every day.

Right, "plastics" is a quite generic word that includes lots of different products. SOme are gasoline safe, some aren't, some are acetone safe and some aren't, my mistake.

Nothing lasts forever, but glass is more chemically stable on a long term than any plastic or polymere. SOme plastics are very sensitive to UVs, glass in not.

Maybe I missed the punch line but why are you mixing acetone and transmission fluid? Using it as penetrating oil? I didn't think I had led that sheltered a mechanical life but had not heard of, thought of that.

According to a test I don't have a link to, acetone and ATF mixed 50-50% is a better penetrating fluid than Kroil (not by far) and a lot better than Liquid wrench or anything else.

Problem is you have to make your mix, store it and you can't put it in a spray can.

    But it works great!

I put my mix in an empty Windex spray bottle. Hasn't eat thru after 1 year and still good, used it last month to loosen shock bolts on my pickup truck.

Be a gamble to see if the acetone doesn't eat some of the necessary rubber or plastic parts inside that refillable spraycan.
    Nifty idea though.
And for those of you who brought up Kroil.I have not found it available anywhere in Oz.Don't get me wrong it maybe available but every lead I get peters out after a few steps.
So until something else comes up I use the acetone and ATF mix a little at a time and apply with a Sauce bottle, like so

I put in my vote for the homemade 50/50 mix, I used it on the water bike I am working on and everything (minus two bolts) camels apart very easily. But yes, I have not yet come up with a way to store it long term, the metal squirt can I have is apparently not sealed tight enough.

Okay. Thanks guys. I had just not heard of that before. I have known for years that simple ATF was a great cleaner of oil/grease/goo as it has some pretty heavy duty detergent additive. Learn something new everyday, that is if you are paying attention.
