Bought a xj650 over the winter and just got it running today. Took it for a quick drive around the block and noticed that the clutch only begins to catch as the lever is prettymuch all the way out. this makes it kind of hard to shift, especially starting on a hill.

Can I adjust this, or is this just a sign the clutch is almost worn out ?

Thanks Bill... I was looking for that. ;)

Mine is having the same problem, plus the bike jumps forward when I put it into gear. I'm hoping a good adjustment will solve both problems.

Edit: Oh, and to the OP: Love your nickname.

When these bikes sit for a long period of time, especially with old oil in them, the clutch tends to "glue" itself together. When you start riding it again, the friction plates have quite often left behind a "memory" of themselves on the plain plates.

Once you've ridden it enough to completely warm it up a couple of times, and changed the oil, etc., it MAY be possible to get the clutch adjusted to work properly again.

    Or not.

Quite often, all that's necessary is to carefully disassemble the clutch; thoroughly CLEAN the friction plates with brake cleaner and the plain plates with solvent/scotchbrite; and reassemble. Inspection of the cleaned parts often reveals no appreciable wear.

These clutches last quite a while before they WEAR out; but they do get gummy and no amount of adjusting will get rid of the drag until you clean out all the residue.
