Aftermarket exhaust baffles, do they work?

So I bought a 1981 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim, and the previous owner took off the original exhaust and installed a pair of 2 into 1 exhaust systems with turned out pipes on them. The entire system is straight pipe, no mufflers as far as I can tell. My job involves driving to kids houses all day and working with the kids and families, and frankly the bike is far too obnoxiously loud as is.

So I was looking at the generic baffles on this page:

Would something like that work to quiet down the bike, or do I need to buy some slip on mufflers? Are there inexpensive slip ons which work well enough and look decent?

    Thanks for any info!

Post a picture or two and give us the inside diameter of the pipe. As you've described it we have no idea of how your system is set up and would be guess work on our part to try and figure out a solution.

There are lots of different slip-ons available; that would probably be the best way to go. And you won't go broke in the process.

Some of the guys go to the Harley Shop and pick up a set of Sportster mufflers and they seem to fit real well. The Harley shop sell em cheap just to get rid of them. Just Remember to ask them about the new take offs

    Ok, here are the pictures:

I measured the diameter of the tailpipe and at the narrowest part it is 2 1/2". I measured the circumference of the pipe the tail pipe slips on to and it measures 6", which appears to convert to 1.91" diameter (about halfway between 1 7/8 and 1 15/16, which confuses me unless possibly it's sized for metric).

As you can see from the pictures there is no collector.

MN-Max - I'll ask my local Harley dealership, thanks.

    Thanks for any further info.

That looks like a Mac 4-2 which run $400+ new. I'm sure there's a few guys on here willing to swap ya for stock, which is quiter/less aggressive sounding.
