I just bought an 1982 Xj550 and I'm looking for air cleaners for it that won't break my wallet. The orignal air box isn't on the bike anymore....honestly I didn't even know it originally came with one untill I started looking online for air filters. So anyway I have seen some air filters that clamp directly onto the backside of the carbs but I haven't found any at a price I was willing to pay......Anyone seen any at a decent price or know where I can find something else that might work?????

I bent over for some K&N filters make sure you get one for the crankcase vent too. Should have been a tube from the case to the air box.

I found a complete airbox, minus the actual filter element, with 3 air hose connectors and a crank case breather hose for 50 bucks on amazon. You might try there again, I don't know if the shop offering it still has it. If you have a stock XJ550 it's the best way to go. I actually ended up getting new air hose connectors because the ones with the airbox were so old and dry rotted it was almost impossible to connect them to the carbs. The rubber bits were 20 bucks each ( I got 4) and the clamps were 10 bucks each ( I got 3). This is the route I went, and may not have been the cheapest, (except where the stock airbox was concerened) but was the easiest.

I am actually doing the same thing. I inquired about installing filter pods and the mechanic told me it would through off the vacuum.
